(Measures 7" or less above the ladder frame when the attic ladder is closed. The Attic Tent has an insulating value of R-3.2. It is a specially engineered, patented insulator designed to create an air transfer barrier between your attic and living areas. It is a practical and economical solution to a problem that has existed since homes were first built with overhead attic entries. That problem is wasted energy through and around the attic door and stairs. It insulates folding attic stairs, knee wall doors, and attic scuttle holes.
Attic Tent AT-2 Attic Cover / Insulator for 25W" x 54"L x 7" Rough Opening Review
I was looking for a solution to insulate my new attic stairs. Thought of building my own cover with insulated boards or buying that other box (battic door/hatch) they sell here, but I discovered I didn't have a perfectly flat surface to rest the box on. There were too many protruding 2x4's supporting the adjacent raised floor that is used to accommodate the attic A/C unit. This thing is made of foam covered in some polyester material which is flexible enough that you can install around imperfections near the attic ladder. It's true the R-value is low, but the goal of this thing is to stop all airflow from conditioned to unconditioned space. The pocket of air created between the tent and the plywood of the attic ladder will provide additional insulation value. I would say 99% of the airflow stops (remember it's zippered and a minimal amount will get through the seems?. Once you install it in place, caulk all around the perimeter. I stapled it and then spread an entire tube of silicone between the tent and the surface it was attached to (use silicone because it will remain flexible and take the heat and cold of the attic better than the acrylic caulk). Installation took about 15 mins and only needed a staple and caulk gun. Since it will be opened/closed only a few times a year, I expect it to hold up well...let's see!
BTW, I bought the slightly smaller model, AT-1, from another auction site (i.e. rhymes with freeway) for half the price. The AT-1 is the most common size. Do your research first on the manufacturers site ([...])and than shop around online for a better deal.
