Christmas Tree was originally introduced in 1938, designed specifically for the American market. It is the oldest holiday pattern in the US today, and is loved by collectors for its nostalgia and warm recollections of past Christmases.

The glazing is a little less then perfectly smooth in places (there's a handful of sand grain-sized dimples). But given the extraordinary price, I'm still very happy with this purchase. The plates will be great for serving desserts, meats, etc... The plates do say "Made in England."

Please note that recently I have found quality problems with many Spode Christmas Tree pattern products, including a tea set from Amazon, as well as 3 Spode Christmas tree plate/mug boxed sets and 1 bowl boxed set from another on-line vendor. All were offered at very affordable prices.

Although not advertised in the product descriptions: 1) the tea set was made in Malaysia, the plates said England, and the mugs were made in Malaysia. 2) The tea set wasn't quite first quality and the plates clearly were seconds (e.g., there were spots without glaze on the backs of all plates/bowls, there was inconsistent color on the front of one plate and a crack around the foot of another).

So beware of good deals on boxed sets of china in the Spode Christmas Tree pattern. Much of this product is no longer being made in England and what is may not be top quality.

I'm told that buying the pieces sold individually SHOULD yield a better quality product, but it is more costly. Spode needs to watch its reputation. If it wants to market lesser quality products and seconds to the public at unusually low prices to attract buyers, it needs to warn people up front when they are ordering lesser quality products.
